Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games African Representatives Now Know Their Opponents

The draw for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games for football have been made today April 21, 2021 at the headquarters of FIFA in Zurich,  Switzerland.  The draw was conducted by Jaime Yarza, FIFA director of the tournament and Sarai Bareman, FIFA chief Women's football Officer.

Three nations will represent the black continent: South Africa,  Egypt and Cote d'Ivoire,  while Zambia are the only representative in the women's soccer category. 

 

MEN'S FOOTBALL DRAW

All three representatives have been drawn in top groups;  South Africa are in group A alongside host Japan,  Mexico;  and France. Egypt are in group C alongside Spain,  Argentina and Australia,  while Cote d'Ivoire have the toughest opponents of the three representatives, as they  are to play holders Brazil,  Germany and Saudi Arabia in group D. 

The top two teams of each group will qualify for the quarter finals stage.  The competition for the men's football competition will run from July 22 to August 7, 2021 in cities like Kashima, Saitamaand, Yokohama,  Sapporo, and Miyagi.

It should be noted that only two African nations have won gold in football in the history of the Olympic games.  Nigeria in  Atlanta 1996 and Cameroon in Sydney 2000.

THE WOMEN'S DRAWS

Twelve teams qualified for the women's soccer category,  with the top two teams of each group qualifying for the quarter finals stage,  and the third best placed sides to complete the quarter finals stage. 

 Zambia who are the lone African representative, have been drawn in group F with the People's republic of China,  Brazil and 2019 FIFA World Cup finalists,  the Netherlands. 

Zambia are making their first appearance in the multi sports event, after eliminating favorites,  Cameroon in the final qualifying round.

The women's soccer category will run from July 21 to August 6 2021. 

It should be noted that the games opening ceremony will take place on July 23 at the iconic new look Tokyo Olympic stadium and will end on August 8, 2021.
